Welcome to Envirobase! Envirobase is a further development of the research database created originally
by the Environment Research Funders' Forum (ERFF); it has recently been merged with the database which
holds the UK Environmental Observation Frameworkâs UK-EOF Catalogue, and the combined database now contains
information about the vast majority of current and recent UK publicly-funded environmental research
and observation activities (and voluntarily funded observation activities). Envirobase and the UK-EOF
are managed by the Living With Environmental Change partnership
(LWEC). Envirobase (version 4.0.0.0) offers the following search options which you can reach
using the menu on the left:
- The Simple search provides text-based searching of all the relevant fields
related to every project, activity and programme. The search returns a list of matching projects, activities
and programmes which in turn include links to related organisations, people and outputs.
- The Advanced search allows you to search for projects by selecting categories
from the ERFF Classification Scheme and returns results in the same form as the Simple search. Only
projects, activities and programmes which we have classified on the ERFF scheme will be found by this
search, so if you want to find the very latest work added to the database you should use the Simple
search. (About database content contains up to date information on what is in the database and what
has been classified on the ERFF scheme.)
- The Custom search provides a simpler way of searching for projects than using
the Advanced search, but still uses the power of the ERFF classifications applied to projects, activities
and programmes to ensure that you find all relevant work that has been classified. LWEC partner organisations
or other frequent users may ask us to help them develop Custom schemes for their own purposes, which
we may make available publicly via the Custom search option.
- The Organisation search provides a list of all of the organisations
matching your search term, with a link to an organisation detail page for each one. Each organisation
detail page lists all the research to which that organisation is linked, as well as all the information
we hold about the organisation itself (contact details, website url). Note that you may find several
entries in the database for different parts of the same organisation, and there are also likely to be
some duplicate entries for the same part of the same organisation. The large number of sources from
which we draw data, and the rapid rate at which organisations move, combine, change names etc makes
it impossible to avoid this problem, although we strive to update and rationalise as much as possible.
To find all research/observation activities related to an organisation you should check all instances
of the organisation.
- The Person search provides a list of all the people matching your search term,
together with whatever contact details we hold for them, and a link to a person detail page for each
one. Each person detail page lists all the research/observation activities to which that person is linked
in the database. As with organisations, we may have some duplicate instances of the same person and
you should check each one to get a full list of his/her work held in Envirobase.
- The Output search provides a list of all outputs included in the database
whose title or description matches your search term, with links to the project information and the lead
organisations involved in the project which produced the output as well as a direct download link for
the output itself (where we hold it on our server) and a link to all information that we hold about
the output.

content.
